Sacraments
The most precious gifts Jesus Christ left us are His Word and the signs He performed to make His saving action accessible to all. The sacraments continue the work of Jesus. Being a Christian means, among other things, participating in the liturgical life of the Church in community, especially through the sacraments celebrated in the name of Jesus Christ.
The central moment for any Christian community is the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist, which commemorates the day of Jesus’ resurrection. At the Tibidabo Temple, you can also participate in this sacrament daily. As a grateful continuation, you have the opportunity to engage in Eucharistic adoration. (See Mass times)
A personal encounter with Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of Reconciliation restores our relationship with God and with our brothers and sisters, healing our wounds and sins. At the Tibidabo Temple, priests are available to celebrate this sacrament (please inquire at the temple reception).
Like any parish, those who attend this parish temple may also receive the sacraments of Baptism and Marriage.
During his visit to Barcelona in 1886, Saint John Bosco prophesied that all those who came to the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to be built atop Mount Tibidabo, would have access to various resources for a personal encounter with the risen Jesus.
Today, this encounter with Jesus primarily occurs through the celebration of the Eucharist, reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation, and active participation in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
According to the Code of Canon Law, and as a general rule, Baptism and Marriage are received in the parish of one’s family or of one of the partners getting married. These sacraments may only be received at the Tibidabo Temple under very special circumstances, with the authorization of the parish priest of the respective parish (cf. 857 and 1115).
Receiving the sacrament of Marriage assumes that the couple has already been baptized, lives their Christian faith in their current situation, and wishes to marry according to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
For couples getting married, encountering Christ through the sacrament of Marriage marks the beginning of a Christian family. This explains why the celebration of this sacrament takes place in the presence of a Church minister and allows members of the Christian community to participate.
The celebration of the sacrament of Marriage at the Tibidabo Temple is distinct from other festive celebrations that often accompany weddings and usually take place in different, more suitable settings.
Preparation and Celebration of Marriage:
- Couples wishing to marry at the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Tibidabo must personally justify this choice at the parish office (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 19:00 to 20:00; phone: +34 93 417 56 86) and be prepared to follow the Church’s preparation process for the celebration of Marriage.
- Once the special circumstances justifying the celebration of Marriage at the Tibidabo Temple have been evaluated, the first important step is the initiation of the premarital file process, which is an indispensable requirement. This process is carried out at the parish of one of the partners and should ideally begin six months before the planned wedding date.
- Starting the premarital file process allows couples to establish personal and direct contact with the parish priest; among other necessary steps, he must authorize the celebration of the Marriage at the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Tibidabo.
- Another important requirement is the couple’s participation in a personal preparation program for the celebration of Marriage, according to the criteria and regulations of the Diocese of Barcelona.
- One month before the wedding at the Tibidabo Temple, the couple must visit the parish office to submit the premarital file and begin the final preparations for the celebration. These preparations include various logistical aspects, such as organizing the ceremony on the agreed date under the specific conditions previously arranged, and fulfilling the commitment to cover the costs of the celebration (Bank account: ES97 2100 3006 9822 0040 2025).
- The only individuals responsible for initiating the preparation process and receiving the sacrament of Marriage at the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are the couples who have expressed this desire and have followed all steps of the process up to the date of their celebration.
