Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Welcome to Tibidabo’s Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Welcome and welcome to the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The top of Tibidabo is 504m above sea level. The name of Tibidabo is the union of two Latin words tibi dabo (I will give you) taken from the Gospel according to Matthew where it recounts how Satan in the third temptation to Jesus in the desert said to him: «I will give you all this, if you bow down and adore me». The Jerónimos monks, who had settled in the area of Barcelona called Vall d’Hebrón since 1393, imagined that the devil could have tempted Jesus by offering him from this summit all the riches of the city of Barcelona, and for that reason they decided to call it that way to this mountain. You can see this scene in a stained glass window of the Basilica.
